Bottle washing troubleshooting.

Treat a bottle washing problem as a controlled investigation. Record the symptom, affected bottle population, machine state and utility condition before changing several variables at once.

Start by preserving the evidence.

Retain affected and conforming bottles, mark the time and format, photograph the symptom, record settings and utility conditions, and identify any recent change in bottle source, label, residue, chemistry, maintenance or line speed. This helps distinguish a process drift from normal sample variation.

Use a one-change test.

  1. Define one symptom and one measurable or observable outcome.
  2. Hold bottle, residue and all other settings constant where practical.
  3. Change one justified variable within the approved operating and safety boundary.
  4. Repeat enough samples to see whether the effect is consistent.
  5. Record the result and restore/retain the setting deliberately.

Escalate when the boundary is unclear.

  • Chemical compatibility, concentration or temperature is uncertain
  • Safety device, guard or emergency-stop behaviour is involved
  • Unknown returned-bottle contents are found
  • Water or effluent quality may be outside the agreed route
  • Repeated breakage or operator exposure occurs
  • Machine settings required are outside the supplied documentation

Link corrective action to verification.

After a fault is corrected, repeat the relevant acceptance check on the affected bottle family and operating condition. Where the change affects the validated process or risk assessment, follow the site’s change-control route rather than treating the repair as a purely mechanical event.

Questions that help separate cleaning faults from handling and line faults.

A repeatable diagnosis starts by defining the failed result, isolating the stage where it appears and checking evidence rather than changing several settings at once.

Why can washed bottles still have streaks or odour?

Washed bottles can retain streaks or odour when the residue is not fully removed, rinse quality is inadequate, chemistry or soil is carried into later stages, bottles drain unevenly, or contamination is reintroduced during handling. The appearance and location of the fault help narrow the cause.

Compare before-and-after bottles, check whether the fault is internal or external, and inspect water, filters, spray coverage and downstream contact surfaces. Do not increase chemistry or temperature without confirming material compatibility and the site’s safety controls.

Review residue and rinse evidence

Why do labels or glue remain after washing?

Labels or glue can remain because the face stock, adhesive, storage age, bottle surface and process conditions are not compatible with the proposed de-labelling and wash sequence. A setting that works for one label batch may tear, smear or leave tack with another.

Trace the failure to a labelled sample group, check whether the label was intended to release, and inspect capture of detached material. Use a representative matrix rather than repeatedly changing the machine around one unmarked bottle.

What causes recurring bottle-washer nozzle blockage?

Recurring nozzle blockage can be caused by label fragments, solids, scale, inadequate filtration, contaminated supply water, damaged nozzles or cleaning that moves debris without removing it from the system. The blockage pattern may indicate whether the source is upstream, recirculated or local to one position.

Record which nozzles block, inspect filters and tanks, and verify the cleaning method and replacement condition. Repeatedly clearing the outlet without removing the source only restores performance temporarily.

Why can a washing line stop even when the washer itself is running?

A washing line can stop while the washer is mechanically available because the infeed is starved, the discharge is blocked, accumulation is full, a downstream filler has stopped, a sensor cannot see the bottle correctly, or an interlock is withholding run permission. The root cause may be outside the washer.

Use the controls sequence and event history to identify the first stop signal rather than the last machine to display a fault. Check bottle stability and sensor position after format changes, then confirm restart behaviour for bottles already inside the process.

Review line interlocks and fault ownership

Send the fault pattern, not only the machine name.

Include photographs, bottle format, residue or label details, when the fault started, any recent change and the operating conditions recorded at the time.
