Which bottles should be rejected before washing and reuse?

Incoming inspection protects operators, machinery and the reuse process by removing damaged, unknown or out-of-scope bottles before they enter the washer.

The washer is not the first quality gate.

A returnable-bottle process should define an incoming acceptance standard before machine selection. The standard separates bottles that can enter the validated wash route from bottles that require quarantine, specialist assessment or rejection. Washing cannot repair structural damage or establish the safety of an unidentified previous content.

Direct answer: reject or quarantine bottles with cracks, chips, severe neck or base damage, embedded foreign objects, incompatible formats, unknown potentially hazardous contents or any defect that makes automated handling unsafe. The precise standard must be agreed by the bottle owner’s quality and safety system.

Design the inspection station.

  • Provide lighting and access to view the neck, body, base and interior
  • Give operators a small number of clear defect categories
  • Use examples or photographs approved by the bottle owner
  • Prevent rejected bottles returning to the accepted infeed
  • Define safe handling for broken glass and unknown residue
  • Record repeated defects by source or return route where possible

Connect inspection to machine design.

The accepted bottle population defines guides, holders, nozzle access and reject handling. Mixed formats can create mechanical faults even when each bottle could be washed individually.

Show the supplier the smallest, largest, heaviest and least stable accepted bottles. Where inspection is manual, include the operator cycle in the capacity model rather than assuming inspection has no effect on line output.

Do not allow a cleaning claim to hide a bottle-integrity decision.

A clean bottle can still be unsuitable for reuse because of structural damage, wear, incompatible material or uncertain history. The final release decision belongs to the customer’s product, packaging and quality system. Separate cosmetic grading from crack and chip rejection. Repeat scuff patterns can also indicate damaging guides, transfers or return logistics that need investigation.

How should foreign objects inside bottles be handled?

Bottles containing foreign objects should be removed before the normal washing route unless a specifically assessed process is designed to recover them safely. Objects can block nozzles, damage pumps, contaminate tanks or remain hidden after washing.

Define a safe inspection and disposal method, particularly for sharp objects, unknown chemicals or containers under pressure. Do not reach into machinery or bottles without an approved safe method.

Where should rejected bottles leave the line?

Rejected bottles should leave at a controlled point before they can enter or re-enter the washer, with physical separation from accepted bottles and a safe collection route. The reject point must be accessible without encouraging operators to bypass guards or reach into moving equipment.

Where a second reject is needed after washing, make the two reject streams identifiable so incoming damage is not confused with a process failure.
